Application Process

The HERO-HEALTH Joint Master’s Programme follows a transparent and structured admissions process designed to ensure the fair evaluation of applicants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds.

Applications are invited from graduates whose academic background is relevant to the interdisciplinary scope of Humanitarian Action, Public Health and One Health. The Programme admits graduates of Higher Education Institutions in Greece or recognised equivalent institutions abroad from the Health Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Economics and Management Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Agricultural Sciences, and other related disciplines.

The maximum number of students admitted to each cohort is twenty-five (25). Where two or more applicants receive the same total number of points, all candidates with the same score are admitted.

Each spring semester, following a recommendation by the Programme Committee, an official Call for Applications is published on the websites of HERO-HEALTH, the lead Department and the University of Thessaly.

The Call for Applications specifies:

• the opening and closing dates of the application period
• the method of electronic or administrative submission
• the supporting documents required
• the interview procedure
• the timetable for evaluation and announcement of results

Applications must be submitted within the period and according to the procedure specified in the current Call for Applications.

Important: Application dates and submission instructions may differ between admission cycles. Applicants should always consult the current Call for Applications before submitting their documents.

The application process consists of the following stages:

1. Check Your Eligibility

Before applying, candidates should ensure that they hold an eligible first-cycle higher education qualification and meet the academic and language requirements of the Programme.

HERO-HEALTH welcomes candidates from a wide range of disciplines because of its interdisciplinary character, including health, social, humanitarian, technological, environmental, engineering and management-related fields.

2. Review the Current Call for Applications

The official Call for Applications provides the definitive information for each admission cycle, including:

• application deadline
• submission method
• required documentation
• interview arrangements
• timetable for the publication of results

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their application is complete and submitted within the announced deadline.

3. Prepare the Required Documents

Candidates should collect all required documentation before submitting their application.

4. Submit Your Application

The completed application and supporting documents are submitted in accordance with the electronic or administrative procedure specified in the current Call for Applications.

5. Evaluation & Interview

Applications are evaluated according to the published selection criteria. The interview accounts for 30% of the total evaluation score and forms an integral part of the selection procedure.

6. Results & Enrollment

Following completion of the evaluation process, the Programme Committee approves the final ranking of applicants. Successful candidates receive instructions regarding acceptance of their place and completion of the required administrative and financial procedures.

According to the current Internal Regulation of HERO-HEALTH, applicants are required to submit the following documentation:

1. Application Form for admission to the HERO-HEALTH Joint Master’s Programme.
2. Copy of the first-cycle degree or diploma, or an official certificate confirming completion of studies.
3. Official undergraduate academic transcript, including the final degree grade.
4. Evidence of English-language proficiency at a minimum B2 level. In specific cases, language proficiency may be assessed by the Selection Committee.
5. Curriculum Vitae (CV) presenting the applicant’s academic background, scientific activity, professional experience and other relevant qualifications.
6. Scientific publications, distinctions and evidence of research activity, where applicable.
7. Evidence of professional experience, where applicable.
8. Additional postgraduate qualifications or doctoral degree, where applicable.
9. Two recent letters of recommendation, preferably from academic staff members.
10. Copy of both sides of the applicant’s national identity card or passport.
11. Two recent passport-size photographs.
12. Solemn declaration under Law 1599/1986, confirming that the supporting documents submitted are true and accurate copies of the original documents.

Please note: The current Call for Applications may provide additional instructions concerning the format, certification or method of submission of supporting documents. In all cases, the requirements stated in the current Call should be followed.

Applicants holding a first-cycle qualification awarded by a foreign higher education institution are subject to the verification and academic recognition procedures provided by the applicable Greek legislation.

The HERO-HEALTH Secretariat verifies the awarding institution and the type of qualification against the prescribed national registers. Where required, additional documentation concerning the place of study and an authenticated copy of the qualification may be requested.

This verification ensures that admission to the Programme is based on a valid and academically recognised first-cycle higher education qualification.

Applications are assessed on a 100-point scale according to predetermined and published criteria.

Following the evaluation of the submitted applications and completion of the interview process, the Programme Committee approves the final ranking list of candidates.

Candidates are ranked according to their overall score based on the published selection criteria.

Where two or more candidates receive the same total number of points, all candidates with the same score are admitted.

Successful applicants are invited to complete the formal enrollment process.

They are required to:

• formally accept the place offered to them
• fulfil the prescribed administrative requirements
• fulfil the financial obligations specified by the Programme
• submit any final documentation requested by the HERO-HEALTH Secretariat
• complete their enrollment according to the instructions provided

If a successful applicant does not complete enrollment, the next eligible candidate on the reserve list is invited to take the available place.

For applicants holding qualifications awarded by institutions abroad, enrollment may require final verification and submission of authenticated documentation in accordance with the applicable procedures.

The Internal Regulation further specifies that successful candidates complete the required financial step before registration and that, where a selected candidate does not enrol, candidates are invited from the reserve list in ranking order.

Following enrollment, students are registered in the University’s electronic student-record system and receive access to the digital services required for their studies.

These include institutional access to services such as:

• University email
• electronic student services
• Microsoft Office 365 and MS Teams
• Open eClass
• University library electronic resources

Newly admitted students also receive initial guidance concerning the academic calendar, distance-learning requirements, assessment procedures, student rights and responsibilities, and the role of the Academic Advisor.
