Biography
Dr. A. Zibis is Head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Thessaly and Professor (Full) of Anatomy. He is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with extensive academic, clinical and educational experience in anatomy, musculoskeletal medicine, spine disorders and orthopaedic clinical practice.
He graduated from the Department of Medicine of the University of Thessaly in 1996. He completed his specialty training in Orthopaedics at the University Hospital of Larissa and also trained at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Hershey, Pennsylvania, USA. He received his specialty title in Orthopaedics in 2006.
He holds a PhD from the Department of Medicine of the University of Thessaly. His doctoral dissertation focused on osteonecrosis of the femoral head, investigating diagnostic and therapeutic approaches using biological and other methods, and was awarded with distinction.
From 2006 to 2007, he received advanced training in spine disorders at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where he served as a Clinical Spine Fellow at the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.
His academic career at the University of Thessaly includes service as Scientific Collaborator, Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor of Anatomy. He has been actively involved in the teaching of Anatomy I, Anatomy II and Anatomy III, with emphasis on the musculoskeletal system, splanchnology and neuroanatomy. He has also coordinated and taught elective courses in surface and clinical anatomy, topographical and functional human anatomy, and anatomy of cadaveric sections and planes.
Dr. Zibis has taught in several postgraduate programmes in Greece, including programmes in clinical and surgical anatomy, surgical sciences, applied biomechanics and biomaterials in orthopaedics, minor pelvic surgery, diabetic foot management, algology and palliative care. He has also collaborated with the European University of Cyprus as Coordinator and Collaborator Teacher in the Musculoskeletal System module.
He has held important administrative positions at the Department of Medicine, University of Thessaly, including Deputy Head of the Department and President of the Undergraduate Studies Committee. He has also served as Vice President of the Hellenic Anatomical Society and President of the Alumni Association of the Department of Medicine, University of Thessaly.
His scientific and educational work includes numerous peer-reviewed international publications, books and book chapters in anatomy, participation in funded research projects, and extensive activity as reviewer and guest editor in scientific journals. He has also organized and contributed to a large number of national and international cadaveric training courses, clinical anatomy workshops and educational seminars.
His main research activity focuses on anatomy education, innovative teaching methods, clinical and surgical anatomy, musculoskeletal biomechanics, spine anatomy, knee joint stabilizers, musculoskeletal imaging, osteonecrosis, and the impact of road traffic injuries on health systems and disability.
